Overview
Colombia launched its digital nomad visa (a category of the Visa V) in 2022/2023, and it's become one of the most accessible programs in the world thanks to a famously low income bar. It allows remote workers to stay for up to two years, and Colombia — especially Medellín — has one of the largest and most active nomad communities in Latin America.
Who qualifies
The visa is open to remote workers and freelancers earning income from outside Colombia, as well as entrepreneurs (including those in tech with a Colombian connection in some cases). You'll need proof of remote employment or clients abroad, income, and health insurance covering your stay.
Income requirements
This is Colombia's biggest draw: the income requirement is roughly three times the Colombian minimum wage, which works out to only about USD 750–900 per month — among the lowest of any digital nomad visa globally. Combined with a low cost of living, it makes Colombia accessible to a very wide range of remote workers.
Documents needed
- Valid passport;
- Passport photo;
- Letter explaining your remote work and a contract or proof of clients abroad;
- Bank statements showing the required income (last few months);
- Health insurance valid in Colombia for the stay;
- Completed online application.
How to apply
Colombia's process is largely online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal. You upload your documents, pay the study fee, and if approved pay the visa issuance fee. Many applicants receive a decision within a couple of weeks. You can often apply without leaving your home country.
Living in Colombia
Medellín's El Poblado and Laureles neighbourhoods are the nomad heartland, with reliable internet, abundant coworking and a temperate “eternal spring” climate. Bogotá and Cartagena are also popular. A local SIM or eSIM and a multi-currency account make settling in easy.
