Overview
Estonia introduced the world's first dedicated digital nomad visa in 2020, cementing its reputation as a leader in digital government. The visa lets remote workers live in Estonia for up to a year while working for foreign employers or their own foreign company. Estonia's famous e-services make day-to-day bureaucracy unusually painless.
Visa vs e-Residency
These two are often confused. e-Residency is a digital identity that lets you run an EU company online — it does not grant the right to live in Estonia. The digital nomad visa grants physical residence for up to a year. Many nomads use them together: e-Residency to operate a business, the visa to actually live there. They are separate applications.
Income requirements
Estonia sets a relatively high income bar. For 2026 applicants generally need to show monthly income of around €4,500 (gross) over the preceding six months. This is one of the higher thresholds in Europe, reflecting Estonia's focus on established remote professionals.
Documents needed
- Valid passport;
- Completed application form;
- Proof of remote work for a foreign employer or your own foreign company;
- Proof of income (six months of statements) meeting the threshold;
- Health insurance valid in Estonia;
- Passport photo and fee.
How to apply
Complete the application form, then submit it in person at an Estonian embassy/consulate or at the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board. Processing typically takes around 15–30 days. There are two visa types — a short-stay (Type C) and long-stay (Type D) — depending on how long you intend to remain.
Schengen & duration
The visa allows up to a year in Estonia. Bear in mind Estonia is in the Schengen Area, so the usual 90/180 Schengen rules interact with travel elsewhere in the zone. Plan multi-country EU travel accordingly.
